Both counselling (especially CBT and trauma - informed approaches) and massage reduce cortisol, the primary stress hormone.
Research: McEwen (2007) on allostatic load supports how stress-reducing interventions reduce long-term harm.
Massage triggers parasympathetic activity (rest and digest mode),
countering fight-or-flight. Counselling reduces hypervigilance and
anxiety.
Field (2014) found massage therapy increases vagal activity and heart
rate variability (HRV), indicating resilience to stress.
Psychosomatic research shows that repressed emotional states
manifest in muscle tension. Bodywork like massage can release this
tension.
Wilhelm Reich’s concept of “body armouring” and later somatic
psychology validate this connection.
Clients receiving massage and/or counselling show improved sleep
patterns, attributed to reduced anxiety and improved neurochemical
balance.
Lutgendorf & Costanzo (2003) noted how emotional expression and
physical relaxation contribute to better sleep quality and duration.
Chronic stress suppresses immune function; interventions that reduce
psychological and physical stress improve it.
Ironson et al. (2005) demonstrated how psychological counselling and
stress reduction increase natural killer (NK) cell activity. Massage also
enhances lymphatic circulation.
Counselling reframes pain perception and reduces catastrophising.
Massage improves circulation, reduces inflammation, and stimulates
endorphins.
Melzack & Wall’s Gate Control Theory of Pain (1965) helps explain
how touch alters pain signals to the brain.
Trauma often gets “stuck” in the body (van der Kolk, 2014). Bodywork
can unlock physical memories. Counselling provides the cognitive
framework to process them.
A somatic approach (e.g. Sensorimotor Psychotherapy) combines both
effectively.
Clients become more attuned to internal states—key for regulating
emotions and identifying early signs of stress.
Craig (2002) links interoception to emotional self-awareness and
resilience.
Counselling improves mood through cognitive restructuring and
emotional support. Massage elevates serotonin and dopamine while
lowering cortisol.
Field et al. (2005) meta-analysis found massage significantly reduced
symptoms of depression and anxiety.
Clients who experience emotional distress through physical symptoms
(headaches, IBS, fatigue) benefit from interventions addressing both systems.
Barsky & Borus (1999) found that integrative approaches are more effective in
reducing recurrent somatic complaints.
When used together, massage and counselling help clients develop regulation
strategies for both physiological arousal and emotional states.
Siegel (1999) and Polyvagal Theory (Porges, 2011) highlight how bodily
safety cues (like massage) support emotional regulation.
Counselling creates narrative coherence and meaning-making. Massage
supports physical recovery from trauma-induced hyperarousal.
Van der Kolk (2014) and Ogden & Fisher (2015) support this dual-approach
for PTSD and complex trauma.

“It was the first time I felt heard — not just in words, but in my body too.”
I came to Unknot after months of feeling constantly wired and disconnected from myself. The combination of counselling and massage helped me understand how much stress I was storing physically. I left feeling lighter, clearer, and more present. It’s now part of my regular self-care.
“It’s like therapy, but with your whole self involved.”
I’ve tried counselling before, and massage before — but never both together. The Reset session gave me permission to slow down and actually listen to what my body was holding. I cried, I relaxed, I slept deeply for the first time in weeks.
“My anxiety used to live in my jaw and shoulders — now I know how to release it.”
Unknot taught me how to recognise the physical signs of my stress and how to respond with compassion, not just push through. The guidance was practical, not preachy. I feel more grounded than I have in years.
Your Questions Answered
Unknot is not a spa, and we’re not a clinical practice. We combine therapeutic counselling, intuitive bodywork, and holistic techniques in one tailored session. It’s professional, trauma-aware care — without the fluff or the coldness. You choose what you need, and we adapt from there.
Some sessions involve talking (like counselling or combined sessions), but others are silent and fully body-focused. If you book a Reset session (counselling + massage), we’ll find the right balance for you — whether that’s 50/50 or mostly one way.
If you're unsure, the Unknot Reset (90 mins of counselling + massage) is a great starting point. It gives you space to explore both physical and emotional tension. You can also message us for a quick recommendation based on your needs.
Definitely. Many clients come to Unknot alongside other forms of support — from physio to psychotherapy. Our work complements, not replaces, other modalities
